The Wicker Man (1973)
Directed By: Robin Hardy
Written By: Anthony Shaffer
Staring:
Christoper Lee
Ingrid Pitt
Edward Woodward
When Sargent Howie of the West Highland Police comes to Summerisle in search a young girl that was reported missing, he finds much more than he bargained for.
As he starts his search for young Rowan he uncovers dark secrets about the natives of the isolated island. He gets the feeling that everyone is lying to him and they all know more than they will let on. Especially the strange Lord Summerisle (a brilliant turn by Christoper Lee), who says whatever he can to appease the police officer.
As his search gets deeper and deeper into the mysteries of Summerisle he finds himself surrounded by dark people and events and sucked into a world he may never forget...or get out of.
This movie is brilliant. I could end my review right there, but then it wouldn't be worth a visit to the fabled SeventhSeal review page now would it. The greatest thing that this film has going for it (and there are many) is the incredible script by Shaffer. He melds ancient druid beliefs with modern Wicca rituals and creates a story utterly bleak and all his own. When one is watching The Wicker Man you don't really know what you think of it. You must first swallow it and then maybe even sit through a repeat viewing before you can really grasp it.
While the film is almost bloodless, it slowly reveals a truly engrossing detective story in the vain of Poes "Murders in the Rue Morgue". A bleak vision is painted of a cop who is stuck in a pagan society isolated on an island, and the commoners do not answer to anyone but Lord Summerisle. You may have noticed that I have kept this review very vague, and that was intentional. This is one movie that you should go into knowing almost nothing about, you will be rewarded greatly.
