The Dave Matthews Band is my all time favorite band, but besides DMB Fan sites, I almost never come across other fans. Locally in my area, I am one of the only ones to even know the band exists. I am curious of is there are any fellow fans, or even if you have heard of them and have some thoughts.

They're okay. I've heard their music. Even though, I am more of the type to listen to Rhianna, the Pussycat Dolls, My Chemical Romance and Korn. However, I understand that they have a large following in college rock. That's where I'd place their sound, especially in the alternative/indie-style type of genre.

Strange enough - the DMB should fall in my music spectrum, but it doesn't. Sure they make OK music, but they've never made me go "Wow"... That said, they're extremely popular in South Africa.

I really, really, really hate DMB. I've never really figured out why, but god... I hate their music.

Which songs do you know of in hating it? The true thing with the band is that the radio and poppy-ness of mainstream people have picked up DMB's least quality music. Their best work is not mainstream, the latest album Stand Up was forced by RCA (whom they hate and will soon leave I believe) with Mark Batson who produced some rap albums and mainstream music. The albums Everyday and Stand Up were both way to influenced by mainstream, pop producers.

I am far, far, far removed from any sort of mainstream culture. I don't think I've even turned on the radio in three years.
That said, all his music is pop oriented anyways. The structure is all the same: Verse, chorus, verse. Seen it a thousand times, and done a thousand times better.
I wouldn't say they're bad, but I wouldn''t say they're any more talented then your average musicians, either.
The actual music to DMB songs are very simple, and some of the guitar work is so cliche it is laughable.
General rule of thumb is that anyone belonging to a major label is churning out horrid music. It's a known fact that the general music listening population couldn't give a nuts about quality or intelligence, they just want catchy hooks.
Oh well, that's just one man's opinion.

What of it have you listened to though? I am not a mainstream fan, at least full on mainstream. And I'm not following your description of the band and the cliche. Their radio songs are indeed cliche, which makes me think that is how your judging them. I've listened to them, and I've listened to the top-whatever radio with the big pop teen-boy bands and whatever they are now, and the difference is huge to me between DMB songs and those. The music itself, the lyrics, etc. But like I've pointed out with DMB, the radio only picks up their poppy low quality songs, I think RCA pressured them into making that (being why I think they're going to Dave Matthews' independent ATO records to do what they want to do for the music). Setting DMB within a group of music that lacks quality and intelligence is not the description 99% of their music/lyrics/etc., or their fans that I know. If you have heard the wide range of their music I won't say more, your opinion is as right as mine to each ourselves and I'm not trying to sway it I'm just not following the description of the band and the comparison to the contest winning, low artistic, music, not the Dave Matthews I know.

I guess I tend to judge music by the instrumentation rather then lyrics and vocals. In fact, most bands I listen to do not even have vocalists.
Music wise, they are very average. Lyrics on some of the tracks are decent. I can't give certain examples because I've only listened to them in my friends car (who is a DMB fanatic), so I never know what track it is.
But yeah, I base judgment on musical merit, not on lyrics.
