As I was looking at the news today, I noticed that the new spin today on the events concerning Virginia Tech featured the alleged gunman, Cho Seung Hui. It has even been uncovered that celebrated poetess Nikki Giovanni taught him at one point. Even beyond that, they are digging into his life, alleged criminal acts and studies as to get a fuller picture of why Cho might have done this on Monday. Of course, it is riveting to watch how each tracing of his life unfolds through investigative reporting. However, it also points to the a sign of modern times: that American society is fascinated by people who do bad things. From Ted Bundy to John Hinkley, there has been in depth coverage into their lives, especially how they functioned while they committed their crimes. In fact, MSNBC over the weekend had re-broadcast an interview with Jeffery Dahmer and his parents. Is this fascination with bad people problematic? Is it part of a larger symptom relating to the dark aspects of American culture? Or is it just basic reportage, especially under the adage, "if it bleeds, it leads"? I wonder what you guys have to say about this.
